The West Nile Virus Strikes Again

Last year the West Nile Virus caused 4 deaths and over 55 human cases of illness nationwide. This year the West Nile virus surged in parts of California, killing one woman and infecting 27 other people. Of the 27 reported cases, 18 incidents were recorded just last week.

Recently another case was reported in Houston, Texas of a 52- year old woman contracting the virus. This is a large increase in cases as compared with only five cases reported at the same time from the previous year.  Officials say high temperatures and rain caused an early start to the West Nile virus season this year.

The West Nile Virus is no laughing matter. It can be transmitted through the smallest of mosquito bites. Most people who become infected experience only flu like symptoms, but it is possible that the infection can develop into encephalitis or meningitis.
